Brave Livia Lancelot retains the series lead

It was a brave Livia Lancelot who retained her lead in the FIM Women's World Motocross Championship after breaking a rib when she could not avoid a fallen rival in the French round of the series.

The Team One One Four Kawasaki rider suffered poor starts all weekend but rode an incredible first moto at Villars-sous-Ecot to race from outside the top ten to catch race-long leader, and series rival, Chiara Fontanesi at the final corner for a spectacular victory which extended her series lead to twenty-six points. Even further back on the opening lap of race two she sensibly concentrated on seeking a second place finish which would leave the two rivals equal over the weekend, but another rider fell directly in front of her as she closed in on her target with four laps remaining. Badly shaken with concussion and a broken rib Livia bravely remounted to earn seven vital points by finishing fourteenth and she now leads the series by eight points with two rounds remaining.

Livia Lancelot: “It was a wonderful Saturday and a difficult Sunday for me ! My start on Saturday was not good but I recovered to second place to chase down Fontanesi on the last lap and pass her in the last corner to win the race. It was crazy !  I can’t explain what happened with my starts this weekend but the second one was even worse than the first; I was outside the top twenty and, as Chiara was fast in this race, the goal was to finish second. I was in fourth just behind Nocera when she made a big mistake at the bottom of an uphill and crashed right in front of me; I hit the bike, then Francesca and crashed. I hit my head pretty hard, and I can’t remember anything about the race or the podium. I just realised where I was when I went for some examinations in the mobile clinic. My twelfth rib is broken, so I just need some rest to be ready for the next GP in Germany.”
