Bad Luck Strikes For Öncü On Day Two

Kawasaki Puccetti Racing rider Can Öncü found misfortune in the second FIM Supersport World Championship race at his team’s home venue of Misano, as he fell after a difficult start and scored no points.

Can had started Race Two from 11th place and not his Superpole qualifying position of sixth under new regulations for 2024, which base the second race grid positions on the fastest lap of each top rider from Race One.

As Can had a short first race on Saturday before he fell he ended up 11th on the second race starting grid.

After a less than perfect start in Race Two Can was 22nd at the end of lap one and just pushed too hard to make up places, falling on lap nine while in 18th place. Can restarted the race after his crash.

With 16 laps of the scheduled 18 completed a red flag was thrown to end the contest, after a rival’s crashing machine adversely affected the track surface. Can was finally classified as a finisher, but in 29th position.

Öncü is 15th in the championship after the fourth round of the year.

Can Öncü, stated: “A race to forget. Unfortunately, I didn’t make a good start and in trying to catch up I had to push too hard and crashed. I tried to rejoin the race but then the red flag came out after a few laps and I had to settle for twenty-ninth place. I’m really sorry because the team did a great job and we had the potential to do well. We’ll make up for it at Donington.”

Swiss rider Marcel Brenner (Viamo Racing Kawasaki) finished race two in 26th place and is 29th in the championship with three points.

Simon Jespersen (Vince 64 Kawasaki) placed 23rd in Race Two, while Gabriele Giannini (Prodina Kawasaki) was disqualified for re-starting a race which had previous seen him declared a retiree in the pits.

After the culmination of the Misano race weekend there will be another break in WorldSSP race action of a few weeks before the fifth round of the championship takes place at Donington Park, in the UK, between 12-14 July.
